I have just received email notice that I have completely paid off my student loans!

What this means to me... how long this has taken me... how good it feels... what a relief it is... I can hardly put into words.

I may have cried a little.

This was a huge thing that seemed to take forever, amidst a lot of strife and stress and terrible mistakes and bad choices and hard work, and just like that, with a four-sentence letter from my student loan company, it's done.

It's DONE.

Holy crap.

*pause while I sit in stunned silence*

Aw, that's wonderful news, Sherry! I'm so happy for you :) It must feel amazing to be free of the dreaded burden that is student debt, and I hope you're planning to go out and celebrate! I'll join you in 2030... I think our outstanding balance is written off 25 years after graduation, and I can't see me repaying it before then LOL. I hope you're bouncing off the walls for a good while longer. And don't worry, I doubt I'll ever get to use my degree, either :( They should come with a money back guarantee, so if you fail to reap the rewards, the Student Loans Company stop charging you for a wasted investment :D

Haha, of course, I can imagine! One door closes...

I balked when he told me the number, especially considering he's just starting his second year in. I thank my lucky stars every day that the degree (which, to be fair, I essentially picked out of a hat) I went for was available ideally at the community college (i.e. truly affordable) level. I'm not sure what we would have done otherwise.

Of course, the irony is that I'm currently laid off, unemployed, all that painful nonsense, so I start to wonder if I should be switching gears in some way and going back to school or something. But the idea of that makes me ill. I just paid off my student loans; the last thing I want is to start up another. *shudders*

Thank you for the early b-day wishes! For the past day or so, knowing it's coming up, I've been struggling a little bit with it. Not with the birthday itself, the age or the number or anything like that; that doesn't trouble me. It's the fact that my life is spinning around upside down and all over the place right now, and I have NO idea when it's going to stop, or shift, or move forward again. I have no idea when things will finally even out from all this mess and stress. So the idea of the birthday, marking more time stuck in this jobless state, that makes it a little more painful than it normally would be, I think. And I feel a bit sad and depressed about that. But I'm trying very hard to remember that there are good things and wonderful people in my life, no matter what happens. Your kind well wishes remind me, and I thank you for that.
