It's snowing out there so I stayed in and watched a movie tonight, and (even though sometimes I forget) I'm reminded once again how much joy a good story brings me. Something engaging, funny, thought-provoking, suspenseful or just plain entertaining - whether it's coming from a book, a television program or a movie, it transports me and invigorates my mind. It injects me with energy.

And most importantly, it makes me feel like almost anything is possible.

In a time like this, when the country is so brutally divided, when people can be so unkind and disrespectful to one another, I need to believe that good things are possible in this world. I need it.

If anyone's still out there... what are your favorite go-to books, movies or TV shows that uplift you or energize you or make you laugh and make you think? What brings you the most joy?

P.S. Completely random side-note: I baked zucchini bread tonight, and it was gooooood. ;)

Yesterday afternoon I made homemade granola. There's something very Zen about baking for me. I find it relaxing.

And fun!

This may be a crazy question, but...

Is there such a thing as spice-scented deodorant? For women, I mean?

A friend of mind and I were talking about this, how women's deodorants tend to be all 'fresh rain' or 'baby powder' or floral scents, when we'd rather smell like spices. So it got me to wondering if such a thing even existed for women.

Anyone know?

2009.

What a year.

I'm not even sure where to begin. I looked back on my entry for last year, January 2009, and I had so much hope for things to be different, for me to work on things and take better care of myself and be more creative and see great changes occur. That didn't happen in the ways I wanted. Not really, not completely. In most ways, I feel like not a lot has changed from the end of last year to the end of this one.

However, I didn't want to get mired in that one entry. I didn't want to get discouraged by the seeming lack of change. Because even though things are not where I'd like them to be, in looking at the rest of my entries for the year, I do see some promise, a glimmer of light amidst the frustrations and anxieties.

Looking back... )

So. What does all this rambling mean? I suppose it may not mean much to any of you as you likely had your own goals, interests and struggles in the past year. Frankly, I'm impressed if you took the time to read this entry at all! *laughs lightly* In an overall sense, I guess writing all this out is my way of showing myself that no matter how bleak the year seemed, no matter how hard things got, I did do the very best I could. It wasn't all bad. In fact, parts of it were very, very good. And those are the parts I need to remember as I take on this new year, and this new decade.

Wow. A new decade. Where did the time go? I feel nervous and a bit anxious -- because I feel like I have so much to accomplish, so far yet to go -- but I also feel positive. Like this new year is a fresh start for me, an opportunity to refocus and keep striving.

This year I make no predictions or promises. I have no earthly idea what 2010 will bring. I only hope that I can rise to its challenges and be open to the multitude of possibilities out there waiting for me.

I hope 2010 brings each and every one of you enormous joy, good health, and an abundance of accomplishment, in whatever ways you can possibly imagine. Let us all dare to dream a little more. ♥

Happy New Year, everyone!

My dear friend [livejournal.com profile] coffee_imp has been going absolutely mad trying to finish sewing her own wedding dress in time, so a few of us got together for a fun "crafting day" on Sunday. I have no crafting abilities so I was not any help with sewing, but I hope I helped her keep her sanity with some fun conversations and lots of laughing.

And I brought cupcakes. Nothing says "I love you" like baked goods. *GRIN*

Homemade cupcakes.

And in a move that might've done Emily Deschanel proud, they were even vegan cupcakes and icings. From a really cool cookbook hilariously entitled "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World", by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Come on, how awesome is that?

I chose two different recipes, and they were really fun to make:

1) The Basic Chocolate Cupcake, topped with Rich Chocolate Ganache Topping

and

2) The Crimson Velveteen Cupcake, topped with Old-Fashioned Velvet Icing

The red velvet cupcake came out a bit burgundy -- I think the measurement for the red food coloring may have been a bit too much. Next time I may try it with less and see if it comes out more bright red instead of brick red. Still yummy, though.

And that chocolate ganache was fascinatingly vegan, wickedly fun to spread on each cupcake, and totally delicious.

I'm saying, you'd never guess these were vegan cupcakes. I can't wait to try another recipe!

Click the link below for pictures of my process and final product. Hey, I never said I was an excellent decorator. That was the very best I could do. (Heee.)

Baking is FUN! )
