After graduating from college, I wanted to start making regular posts again. I was excited at the thought of extra time in my evenings where I might be able to do other things, like write. I couldn't wait for the day to arrive when I could jump back in.
You know... it's tougher than I thought. To jump back in.
Writing's something that comes naturally to me, much more than, say, public speaking (no, thank you). I thought I'd fall back into writing immediately, no problem. So much to say, so many stories to tackle.
But I just feel so disconnected. Not just to LiveJournal, but to everything.
Maybe it's a side effect of going back to school. I spent the past 3 1/2 years in the mindset of "keep your head down and get it all done." There was a ton of work and homework and late nights, some stress, some fun and enjoyment, but mainly just a lot of deep focus.
I spent so much time shoving everything else to the side. Writing, singing, going to the movies, spending time with friends, spending time with family (outside of the holidays, I mean), taking care of myself and my health, you name it, I put it on the backburner. That mentality got so deeply ingrained, I feel like I don't know how to let go of it. Like someone who goes undercover for a couple years and when the final bust goes down, what are they supposed to do next? How are they supposed to let go of the persona they've been playing for two years? How do they get back into their own headspace?
I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
It feels like I have all these ideas about what I'd like to do with my time, but I'm so used to telling myself, "No, there's no time for that right now, wait until after school is done." It's gotten so that I don't know how to rev myself up to dive in and tackle some of these ideas.
I figure the thing is to just do it, just open a book or read through old story notes or join a group, anything to get involved again. No pressure or schedule about it, just see what energy stirs up and where my thoughts and ideas take me. See what I find myself getting passionate about enough to make the time for it.
But it's more challenging than I thought. I find myself feeling a bit aimless, like I know there's something out there I should be doing but I haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe it's a side effect of this extra-long-and-lingering winter we seem to be having this year. Maybe it's a sign that I need a change of venue, something outside of Wisconsin and Illinois, someplace new to invigorate my senses again. I wish I knew what I needed.
I feel like I'm trying to figure it out.
In the meantime, I did say I'd try to post messages with a more positive slant to them, so here's one:
Happiness is... the kindness of a stranger.
Today I stopped at the grocery store for a few items, and while I was bagging some onions, my scarf got caught on the edge of the bin and knocked a few onions off the stand, sending them rolling across the floor. I made some sort of noise of surprise and mild annoyance, and bent down to pick up the small mess. Another customer walking by joked about how that's happened to her too and very kindly helped me retrieve the runaway onions from the floor.
It's so silly, because it's such a simple moment. But more and more it seems people get caught up in their own worlds (see above commentary about my own 'stuck' life right now, LOL) and they stop paying attention to one another out there in the day-to-day environment. That woman could have walked right on by with her cart and left me to take care of the issue myself. It was only about 2 or 3 onions, no big deal, really. I was perfectly capable of dealing with it, but instead she took time to help me out. In doing so, her friendly remarks and generosity in the moment really stuck with me the rest of this day.
So, thank you, Kind Stranger. You brightened my day. I hope someone does the same for you.

Can you believe it??
Seems like forever ago I came here and posted about taking my very first class, and about how nervous I was going back to school after so long away from that kind of environment. I thought this day would never come. I agonized over it, and worried that I wouldn't be able to handle the coursework, especially not being a graphic artist.
I'm still no expert, will always have lots to learn and hone, but at long last I am done with school!
This feels so surreal, I'm not even sure what to do with myself. LOL. *GRIN*
Obviously, I have to find a job, but beyond that I'm just so happy to have a part of my life back. After 3 1/2 years of non-stop studying, homework, tests and projects, I will have some actual free time in my schedule, time that I can devote to so many different options.
It's almost overwhelming. I've spent so much time these past few years having to be so structured with my time and energy. I'm not sure I know how to turn off that mindset and allow myself to 'go with the flow' for a while.
Plus, I'll be going from a ton of structure in my life to almost none, so it's going to be tough to find a new balance, where I'm not forcing myself to GO GO GO all the time because that's what I'm used to, and instead allow myself to relax a bit more often... but at the same time not completely fall apart with no structure, you know what I mean? It's going to be an interesting challenge, to find that new balance.
Nevertheless, I'm just so happy to be done with school. Honestly, I'm not sure it's sunk in yet. Of course, grades aren't posted yet, and I doubt the school will send me a diploma before the holidays, so nothing's completely official yet. But I have finished my final class day and my homework's all been submitted, all tests taken, so there's nothing left for me to do in this arena.
I'm DONE! And I worked really hard to get to this day, so -- as I instructed a friend of mine who also just finished her degree -- I'm taking a moment to savor the accomplishment.
Thank you all for being SO supportive over these past years, as I struggled and learned and complained and whined and cursed and laughed and worked to get all this done. I'm truly grateful.

- There are some stories I've wanted time to finish -- I could get back to writing.
- I've thought about joining a choir or finding an outlet for singing of some sort.
- I have a stack of books to read, novels and biographies and books that I've received as birthday and Xmas gifts that are just waiting to be opened and poured over.
- I'd like to experiment with some computer art Photoshop and Illustrator tutorials to practice my skills and have some fun trying to recreate their final products. Given how much I hated Photoshop in the beginning, that statement alone is pretty damn huge. :D
- I'd like to create a fun website as a home for my writings (both personal and fanfiction), and other creative works. This is actually something I worked on as an assignment during one of my very first web design classes, but now that I know how to do a lot more, I'd like to rework the design.
- I want to get back to my workouts and focus harder on losing the weight I'd like to lose, a project which had been pushed to the wayside for a while now because I had too much on my proverbial plate and that kind of endeavor needed more focus than I had time or energy to devote.
- I'd also like to relax a bit, maybe watch some movies, allow myself to do 'nothing.'
- And of course I want to spend some time here, catching up with everyone and re-engaging with my friends online and off.

A whole new meaning
Feb. 17th, 2013 08:27 pmI was just reading a piece of fanfic someone had posted online, and came across a wacky, misspelled word that made me laugh out loud.
The character was trying to regain his composure.
However... the author accidentally misspelled that word, and ended up saying the character was trying to regain his composer.
Which seems completely wrong. Then again, it was a Glee fanfic, which is all about glee club and singing and choir and performance, so maybe the character really was trying to regain a composer.
Heeeeeeeeeeee.
That's almost as chuckle-worthy as whenever I see this error: "She just couldn't bare it anymore."
I have no idea why, but apparently there are lots of characters out there who have trouble with nudity.
;)
Thankfully, neither of those errors are as cringe-worthy as this one: "He put his arms around her waste."
Please, for the love of everything Shakespeare, it's W-A-I-S-T. WAIST! NOT WASTE! Unless you really mean for your character to be holding someone else's, well... you get the pitcher. I mean, PICTURE!

Feb. 16th, 2013 02:11 pmAlmost two weeks ago, I posted a rather vague private message about receiving some devastating news. Without even questioning what was up, you sent me posts of love and hugs and support.
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that.
Most of you -- at least, those of you still in the X-Files community -- probably know by now, but the reason for my sorrow was that I'd just gotten word that my dear friend
bardsmaid (Susan) had passed away.
Frankly, I'm still feeling the depths of that loss. She was a talented writer and thoughtful poster, to be sure, but she was also my friend. And you never realize just how often you talk with someone about everything and anything until you can't do it anymore.
I want to write up something about Susan and what she meant to me as a writer, an X-Files fan and as a beloved friend, but I think those thoughts are going to have to simmer for a while longer. I've been re-reading some old emails from her, and thinking about just what it is that I want to say. But as I said over on Susan's LiveJournal when her daughter posted an official message, one of the great foundations of my friendship with Susan was our shared love of thorough feedback and the marvelous details of life. So she deserves a thorough post, and I'm not going to half-ass it or rush through it just to get something up on LiveJournal. I want to take my time. I think Susan would have appreciated that, or at the very least -- given her own detail-oriented nature -- I think she'd understand my need to do it that way.
That, and I've always been a damned slow writer.

For now, I'll simply link to a brief post I made about her writings, presented on Bardsmaid's birthday all the way back in 2008: Reading is Delightful and Delicious. If you've never read any of her stuff, it's worth a look or two.

May. 4th, 2012 09:19 pmI was just reading this article by Dodai Stewart over on Jezebel.com, entitled "Film Schooled: The Truth About Women and Hollywood..." and it got me to thinking.
(I know. Dangerous, so dangerous.)
According to this article, movie executives don't seem to think there's a place for actresses over a certain age. (Heaven forbid there be films involving women over 30.) I quote: "What movie would you make for them?" asks our former studio chief. "They can't date anymore, they're all mothers. After a while, trying to extract the same story from the same tropes gets old."
Another quote: "These actresses? They're fucked. Good luck to Kate [Hudson] and Reese [Witherspoon]. When Cameron [Diaz] was getting cold, she bet on herself, took just a million dollars on Bad Teacher. But even that's not a romantic comedy. The mid-budget studio film -- what used to be the sweet spot for romantic comedy -- is getting painfully squeezed."
I don't deny that romantic comedies are so clichéd that it's tough to find a fresh new story in that avenue. But to say that women who are over 20-something and have personal lives and kids at home can't have interesting roles and that the only thing out there for women is a rom-com and once they're too old or already 'been there, done that' for that kind of role that they're done? That there's nothing for them? They're too 'old' for their characters to 'date'?
Is that the only type of role women are supposed to fill?
That's bullshit.
And why don't we see these things said about men? Tom Hanks has done rom-coms (Splash, You've Got Mail), and he has kids and a family, but he's still got plenty of roles available to him. He's not 'fucked.' He's not unable to 'date' in films. (And don't give me that Tom Hanks is talented and/or versatile, and these women aren't. Reese Witherspoon has won an Oscar too, and she's played some terrific roles, like in Walk The Line and Election.)
I just eyeroll the attitudes of movie executives in Hollywood. Isn't there anyone out there who's interested in building a studio that steps outside the box and offers stories and roles for men and for women that don't force them into stereotypes?
One former studio chief says this: "I think ... all the women in [Kate Hudson's] age group -- I would even include Reese Witherspoon -- need roles tailored for them and that those kinds of movies are not being written."
Why aren't they being written? If statistics show that women buy 50% of all movie tickets, why don't we see more films written with female roles in mind?
What makes a 'female role'? So, let me get this straight: men can play anything but women are relegated to playing mothers or romantic partners, and that's it? That's the extent of their stories to be told? (Unless, of course, they're terrorized victims, of physical or emotional abuse of some sort, needing to be saved by the leading male character. That seems to be the other cliché to be played by women.) And why do they assume that the only thing women want to see are romantic comedies?
Maybe new stories need to be written. And then made by smart, brave people willing to take chances.
I ask you, my dear LJ friends, what types of rich, in-depth, kick-ass stories would you like to see made with female characters? What would make you spend your hard-earned dollars in the theatre or to check out a new TV show? What would make you go, 'Wow, that looks interesting, I totally want to see that'?

2009.
What a year.
I'm not even sure where to begin. I looked back on my entry for last year, January 2009, and I had so much hope for things to be different, for me to work on things and take better care of myself and be more creative and see great changes occur. That didn't happen in the ways I wanted. Not really, not completely. In most ways, I feel like not a lot has changed from the end of last year to the end of this one.
However, I didn't want to get mired in that one entry. I didn't want to get discouraged by the seeming lack of change. Because even though things are not where I'd like them to be, in looking at the rest of my entries for the year, I do see some promise, a glimmer of light amidst the frustrations and anxieties.

So. What does all this rambling mean? I suppose it may not mean much to any of you as you likely had your own goals, interests and struggles in the past year. Frankly, I'm impressed if you took the time to read this entry at all! *laughs lightly* In an overall sense, I guess writing all this out is my way of showing myself that no matter how bleak the year seemed, no matter how hard things got, I did do the very best I could. It wasn't all bad. In fact, parts of it were very, very good. And those are the parts I need to remember as I take on this new year, and this new decade.
Wow. A new decade. Where did the time go? I feel nervous and a bit anxious -- because I feel like I have so much to accomplish, so far yet to go -- but I also feel positive. Like this new year is a fresh start for me, an opportunity to refocus and keep striving.
This year I make no predictions or promises. I have no earthly idea what 2010 will bring. I only hope that I can rise to its challenges and be open to the multitude of possibilities out there waiting for me.
I hope 2010 brings each and every one of you enormous joy, good health, and an abundance of accomplishment, in whatever ways you can possibly imagine. Let us all dare to dream a little more. ♥

What a year.
I'm not even sure where to begin. I looked back on my entry for last year, January 2009, and I had so much hope for things to be different, for me to work on things and take better care of myself and be more creative and see great changes occur. That didn't happen in the ways I wanted. Not really, not completely. In most ways, I feel like not a lot has changed from the end of last year to the end of this one.
However, I didn't want to get mired in that one entry. I didn't want to get discouraged by the seeming lack of change. Because even though things are not where I'd like them to be, in looking at the rest of my entries for the year, I do see some promise, a glimmer of light amidst the frustrations and anxieties.

So. What does all this rambling mean? I suppose it may not mean much to any of you as you likely had your own goals, interests and struggles in the past year. Frankly, I'm impressed if you took the time to read this entry at all! *laughs lightly* In an overall sense, I guess writing all this out is my way of showing myself that no matter how bleak the year seemed, no matter how hard things got, I did do the very best I could. It wasn't all bad. In fact, parts of it were very, very good. And those are the parts I need to remember as I take on this new year, and this new decade.

(I've been watching Merlin, so please forgive the medieval reference. Hee.)
Anyway, to explain: back in August, I responded to
readthesubtext's personal LJ when she asked her friends-list members to give her some 'top five' questions. In retribution for all the torturous questions I gave her to answer, she came back and gave me the same treatment when I posted the meme to my LJ. (And I love you for it, Gemma. *GRIN*) I answered everyone else's offerings first because they seemed easier, but then I got sick of reading my own voice on the page so I decided to take a break from answering before diving head-first into Gem's marvelously lengthy list.
Now I'm back. (Everybody run!)

Top Five Meme. You know the drill. ;)
First of all, true to what I said would happen, I did think of a couple more answers to
callieach's Top Five Ensemble Showtunes question, and slapped myself for forgetting. After all, how could I forget the classic "One" from A Chorus Line? Say what you will about that show and how agonizingly long it ran, but it's still a memorable dance number and one of those songs you just can't get out of your head. (For better or for worse.)
I didn't slap myself for not thinking of that one, but I did grunt and slap myself in frustration with the realization that I forgot about "Let The Sun Shine In" from Hair. How could I forget that? *head desk* All these big-haired, rainbow-peace-love hippies go out into the audience and dance all over you! Heeeee. And make you get up and dance with them. And make you want to. It's very alluring. *GRIN* Seriously though, it's a good song, one that draws you in, uplifts your mood, makes you want to sing along, and besides, it's just plain FUN. greatbriton gave me the opportunity to ask for one when she posted this meme in her LiveJournal.
In fact, she went well beyond the call of duty because she let me make suggestion after suggestion, and then she let me send her some photos, all so she could make me what I envisioned in my crazy little mind. In fact, I told her she should change her name to "ReallyfreakingawesomeBriton" because "great" no longer covered how wonderful she's been. But she wisely decided to keep her user name, because that's really long and tiring to type. *GRIN*
Anyway, the meme she used stated that the first ten people to comment to her post would get a customized icon of their choosing. In return, the requester has to post the same meme in their journal and offer to do something creative that they enjoy (like writing fiction, or making icons, or whatever).
GreatBriton made me some fun user pics (see above for one of them, whoo!), so it's my turn to offer something of myself. I can't make cool icons, I don't have the tools or knowledge for such a thing, but I can offer something else:
I can write for you.
Therefore, the first TEN people to comment in this post (heh, my chatty replies will not be included in the count) get to request a writing of their choosing from me. It can be a review/commentary of a favorite television episode, or it can be a piece of fanfiction. If it's fiction, you can even suggest a pairing, or name an individual character you'd prefer I focus on. (Within reason. I have a small handful of things I won't write, but I'm generally flexible.) Who knows? Your requests may help me jump-start my creative writing muse, which is always a good thing.
Fandoms I can do:
The X-Files, The West Wing, Supernatural, Bones, NCIS, or Prison Break. Firefly, possibly.
I can even try Farscape or Doctor Who, but I'm new to those shows so I don't know how strong the character voices will be (I'd have to take the time to watch some episodes and try to get them into my head, in order to do them right).
I can't promise anything extraordinarily lengthy (after all, ten stories and/or reviews is a lot to put together and it will obviously take me some time), but I will do my very best to write something (one hopes) entertaining and interesting for you to read.
I don't like when memes force you to post in your own journal, so if you request something from me and don't feel that you have the time or creative interest to offer something to your own f-list, don't feel obligated to post this in your journal.
However, if you are motivated to give it a try in a way that you can offer, go for it. The possibilities are out there: fiction, drabbles, icons, vids, meta, whatever you like! I'd love to see what you may be inspired to create.
So.

First Lines

lostakasha, seemed potentially fun and enlightening.
Simply list the first lines of each story you've written.
(Edited comment. Or, apparently it's this: Post the first lines from your 25 most recent stories. Do you notice any patterns?)
I've found it's interesting to see the variety of approaches people take when starting off their stories. Does that first line grab the reader immediately? Make you think? Make you pause? Make you laugh? Make you want to read more?
I'm not sure mine are anything particularly earth-shattering in any of those categories, but it was a cool exercise to dig them up and see how I began each piece. I liked the one that began with dialogue, and I was especially amused by the one that started with just one word.
Anyway, my 'first lines' list is short and sweet, because I haven't written that many stories. Which gives me another nudge to make more time for it!

Ironically, the story I happen to think contains some of my best writing (Scenes From Hell) seems to have the most bland opening. In my defense, that line has a purpose. But one hopes you'll see that when I finish editing the beast and post it here at long last.
Regardless, it's an intriguing exercise, isn't it? Makes me wonder how some of my favorite authors measure up, with their published novels and opening lines. Hmm.
So, all you fabulous writers out there, what are some of your first lines? :)

lostakasha: After reading your post with all your AtS listings, this morning out of curiosity I glanced through some of your Bones fic opening lines. Gorgeous stuff. I think my favorite is from The Kindness of Strangers: "As a child, I was work." Simple and straight to the point. Immediately makes me want to know more about this narrator, and why he thinks he was so much 'work.' Was he truly a challenge? Or did his mother or father make him feel that way? And what is he like today? There are other first lines of yours that I really like too, but that one was the most immediately thought-provoking. (Though I do think that the opening line to Lilly and the Jack of Hearts has one of the prettiest images, with those drifting cherry blossoms. Lovely.)

The greatest gift you could give her is to read one of her stories, and send her some feedback. Talented authors need and deserve plentiful commentary, and she's one of the BEST, so... I highly, highly recommend you visit her site and pick at least one story to read, from the X-Files section here or the general 'Short Stories and Commentary' section here. Then by all means, please send her a lovely message.
Even if you're not familiar with The X-Files realm, it doesn't matter. Her writings are rich with character complexity and fascinating detail. They should be read.
If I may suggest pieces to whet your appetite, these are two of my favorites:
Overhead, The Stars ~ Two captivating characters: Fox Mulder and Alex Krycek. The weight of the world on each man's shoulders. A quiet yet surprising night in which the two rivals come to a momentary, unexpected truce in an intriguing (and humorous) way. As Bardsmaid herself notes, it involves "two very tired men, a language lesson, [and] a houseplant."
My added comment: Come on, you've got to be curious after reading that wacky description. *GRIN*
One of many great lines throughout, this one said in a snarky way: "Get a dictionary, Mulder."
(Heh.)
Outpost ~ A fascinating snapshot of characters Dana Scully and Alex Krycek (and yes, mentions of Fox Mulder) during a moment's respite from fighting the alien occupation. This story captures the flavor of a dusty Star Wars-like "cantina" in a modern world slowly coming apart, with a poetic, contemplative quality that is pure Bardsmaid.
One of my favorite lines: "Her cheeks are flushed, her expression warm and relaxed; it lights the shadowed corner of the room like a quiet fire spied through a frosty window."
Lovely.
I truly hope you decide to check out her work and discover for yourself how terrific it is.
