Top Five Meme. You know the drill. ;)

First of all, true to what I said would happen, I did think of a couple more answers to [livejournal.com profile] callieach's Top Five Ensemble Showtunes question, and slapped myself for forgetting. After all, how could I forget the classic "One" from A Chorus Line? Say what you will about that show and how agonizingly long it ran, but it's still a memorable dance number and one of those songs you just can't get out of your head. (For better or for worse.)

I didn't slap myself for not thinking of that one, but I did grunt and slap myself in frustration with the realization that I forgot about "Let The Sun Shine In" from Hair. How could I forget that? *head desk* All these big-haired, rainbow-peace-love hippies go out into the audience and dance all over you! Heeeee. And make you get up and dance with them. And make you want to. It's very alluring. *GRIN* Seriously though, it's a good song, one that draws you in, uplifts your mood, makes you want to sing along, and besides, it's just plain FUN. What's not to love about that?

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] lostakasha, I know you must have heard that one! I read your Woodstock LJ entry. ;)

Okay, now that I've got that off my chest, let's get to the next request in line.

These questions were asked by the most awesome [livejournal.com profile] siapom. Welcome to my LJ, and thanks for playing along!

Top Five Commercials That Make You Cry

You know, I've thought about this and thought about this, and for the life of me I cannot think of any! I know there have been commercials that choked me up and drew tears, but it's been so many years since I've watched a commercial (or really paid attention, rather than immediately switching channels or muting them once they started, until the show came back on) that I can't seem to remember any. I hate to give a cop-out answer, but it's the truth.

What kinds make me cry? Probably those Hallmark card commercials. Or the old Coca-Cola commercials where everyone sings together.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific on this one! I would if I could! *covers face in shame*

If it makes you feel better, this one doesn't make me cry, but it does make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside every time I see it: the Campbell's soup commercial that only airs during wintertime, when the snowman trudges through the freezing cold, gets home, takes off his hat and scarf, warms up some soup, and as he eats it, he starts to melt... revealing a cute, freckle-faced little boy underneath. It's just so cute, and such a clever idea. I really like that.

Which ones make you cry? Tell me, and I'll probably slap myself upside the head and say, "Oh yeah, that's right! I love that one!" *GRIN*

Top Five People You'd Invite To A Once-In-A-Lifetime Dinner

That is so hard! As I was telling my friend AF this morning, I answer this and invariably find myself feeling like an idiot, thinking I should come up with smarter answers, like names of people who are scientists or Nobel prize winners or brilliant intellectuals. Also, what always happens is, I think of other good answers months after the fact, and want to kick myself. But as an almost-repeat of Callie's Top Five Celebrities You'd Like To Meet, these are truly people I always think of when asked this kind of question, people with whom I think it would be greatly fun to meet and have a lengthy conversation.

* The cast of The West Wing. Which cast members? Bradley Whitford, because he's from Wisconsin, I'm from Wisconsin, we're clearly awesome because of it (haha) and will at least have a starting point of conversation. LOL. Plus, I adored his character, Josh, and Brad seems to be funny and charmingly self-deprecating. Martin Sheen, because I think he has the most infectiously delightful laugh and most assuredly will have the best stories to tell. (He worked with Brando, you know.) Allison Janney, because she is divine and elegant and funny, and we could sing songs together. Heee. Richard Schiff, because... well, he was the very first person to inspire me so much that I tried my hand at writing fan fiction about his character; because he keeps my attention with every little subtle tic and mannerism he uses; and because I fell in love with his character Toby Ziegler, no matter how hard Toby tried to push everyone away with his cantankerous, righteous bitching. He is awesome with a capital A. (Richard the actor, that is, and Toby the character.) And if wishes made it so... the late, more-than-great John Spencer, because his Leo McGarry was so much ♥

Can that count as one unit instead of five individuals? Please? *GRIN*

Because I like to push my luck, if I could have four more...

* Joss Whedon. Because I genuinely like him. I like his wit, I like his writing style, I like his TV shows and creative ideas, I like how hard he tries (even when an occasional episode may fall short of desired execution) and how hard he works (when he's good, he's phenomenal), and I just think he seems like such a good guy. I think I could learn from him, and I think he'd be really fun to hang out with.

* Stephen King. Because I was completely inspired by his book about writing, called (simply and straightforwardly enough) On Writing. Because I think he has a wicked sense of humor, he writes the most entertaining essays, and he knows all the best rock songs. Because Uncle Stevie never steers you wrong. *GRIN*

* Maya Angelou. Because she seems strong, thoughtful and regal, and every time I see an interview with her, she has something intelligent and wise to share. On the flip side, she also seems like an excellent listener. And she's had a fascinating life, so she's got plenty of moving stories to tell. Great woman.

* All of you on my friends-list! Again, I'm cheating with this answer, but seriously, how fun would that be? To put faces to names, to laugh and talk about our interests in person for a change... it would be one gigantic party. Whoo!

And finally...

Top Five Guilty Pleasures

Heh. Don't make fun of me now. Well, you can mock me a little bit, but have some mercy.

:D

* Cheetos. Or sour cream & onion potato chips. They're evil, and I like it that way. Not often, but every once in a while, I crave these kinds of snacks.

While we're on the food kick...

* Dunkin' Donuts. Especially "long johns" with either vanilla or chocolate icing (but no filling inside, please). GIMME! I desperately like breads and baked goods. Wicked, but verrrry yummy.

* Certain chick flicks. Not all of them, mind you, because some can be very, very badly written and just so STUPID. But when I'm in the mood, I'll admit it, I like some of these: When Harry Met Sally (my favorite); Sleepless in Seattle (Rita Wilson and Rosie O'Donnell make me laugh, Meg Ryan's sweet and I like Tom Hanks a lot); Ever After (because even though Drew Barrymore's accent is kind of atrocious, I like that she saves herself and teaches the prince a thing or two); Ladyhawke (because it's the charming Matthew Broderick and the gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer, plus during college I would take four-mile-walks with this film's soundtrack, which has some magnificent strings arrangements, on my walkman -- P.S. to [livejournal.com profile] callieach, I wanted Michelle's haircut from this one); Miss Congeniality (because I find it really funny); Pretty Woman (because Laura San Giacomo is hilarious, and I love it every single time when Julia Roberts tells off the snooty rude women in that upscale clothing shop); and Steel Magnolias (because no matter what you think of this movie, sappy tearjerker or not, I love how it's about the relationships between women, and beautifully demonstrates how we can be bitchy and catty, funny and raucous, hard and soft, jealous, mean, sweet, generous and loving).

* Project Runway. I don't usually watch reality TV shows. I think they delight in bringing out the worst in people, and that's not particularly funny to me. But Project Runway is not only entertaining to watch -- I will never forget Santino's hilarious imitation of mentor Tim Gunn -- but it also forces people to be artistically creative and it has a goal and proper reward at the end, that people are fighting for because it actually has to do with their personal talents and dreams. They're not competing just for the hell of it. Most of these people genuinely want to become great clothing designers, and the money and contacts earned at the end of it could help them get started in a big way. Plus, it's fun to watch someone try to make a dress out of corn husks. ;)

* Occasionally listening to the cheesy music my parents played around the house when I was a kid. 50's Motown (well, that's not cheesy, it's plain cool), ABBA, John Denver, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, and Barbra Streisand. In my defense, to borrow from David Boreanaz's character Angel, "Well, I know the words. And I kinda think it's pretty." Heeeee.

Although I would argue that Barbra Streisand isn't a guilty pleasure -- whether or not her style of music is your preference, Babs is unquestionably a talented vocalist, and I will argue with anyone who says otherwise. I can provide many, many examples, so don't test me on that. LOL.

And as a BONUS, because I couldn't give you a solid list of Top Five Commercials That Make Me Cry, I'll throw in one more guilty pleasure. Just don't tell my parents, because they'll blush and be embarrassed for me and I can't handle their judgment on this one. *laughs uproariously*

What am I talking about? Well... I will confess to enjoying the occasional NC-17 fan fic. With one very important addendum: so long as it's written well. By that, I mean the characters are in character from the show as we know them, and the sex scenes actually have purpose and/or manage to illuminate the characters, to reveal even more about them through those actions. That's what floats my boat. So to speak. *wicked grin*

Two top-notch examples of this:

A Dream Of Fools, by Spica. Summary: Tiger and wolf, winter snow and cornflowers, wounds and desire: a war of wills. Written for The X-Files fandom, she actually pairs up Dana Scully with Alex Freaking Krycek, but in a way that works! (For me, anyway.) Their coupling is at first awkward, bizarre, unexpected and a bit angry, but also becomes curious, oddly sweet, and highly electric. These characters are marvelously in character all the way -- vibrant, intelligent Scully and brittle, dangerous, awesomely Russian Krycek -- and we see so many interesting insights revealed about both of them, their inner pains and fears and feelings, through Spica's well-written words.

Slant, by [livejournal.com profile] minorgraces. Summary: the unlikeliest love story in the world happens as quickly as a twenty foot fall from a shaky fire escape. In one moment everything and everyone is changed. Written for the Bones fandom, she takes an unusual pairing choice -- Booth and Hodgins -- but skillfully makes it not only plausible but also remarkably beautiful. In my opinion, not all male characters on TV shows can be slashed (in other words, written as a male/male couple, even if they're not presented that way on the actual program from which they stem). No matter how much people may want two characters to pair up, certain ones just don't fit together. However, in Slant, Booth and Hodgins fit. Magnificently well. In Minor Graces' hands, Booth and Hodgins coming together makes total sense. In Minor Graces' poetic hands, they're everything we know and love about the characters yet become so much more. They're funny, sarcastic, harsh, tortured, lost, awkward, fumbling, and very, very sexy. And most importantly, believable. Like with Spica's piece, Minor Graces manages to reveal more detail about her characters throughout every scene, including the sex. Not just with Booth and Hodgins, but for all the other Bones characters, too. They're so fully realized and deliciously alive, it's wonderful. Unquestionably gorgeous writing, too. Final note: to this day, I've never forgotten the haunting line, Rangers lead the way. Read it, and you'll see why. It'll break your heart.

Side note re: Slant. Minor Graces and I are buds, so she once privately emailed me the story in entirety, which is how I read it. I see now that she does not happen to have the story posted in entirety on LiveJournal. The link I provide above will start you off, this link lists the other posted parts, which cover a little over half of the entire piece (which is quite long, but awesomely so). If you read that much and find you love it, PM her and I know she'll send you the rest. Or maybe this will nudge her to finish posting it to her site. *laughs uproariously* Minor Graces, I tease because I love. ♥

At any rate, both of these fictional works are well worth a look.

And that's it for part 2! I hope you're finding these a bright spot of entertainment in your day. If not, well, what the F*** do you want from me?? *teasing grin*

Oh man, your ensemble showtunes answers are making me want to listen to Les Mis and Phantom again. :D

HAHAHAHHAAA Really? That is such funny timing!

And I agree... just compiling my list of answers for that question made me want to listen to all my musical cast recordings again. I really need to listen to Miss Saigon, too. There are some great songs in that one as well, but I only have it on audio tape! (Ah, remember the days...)

Thank you for commenting, [livejournal.com profile] inlaterdays. I know your LJ time has been limited lately, so it's cool of you to stop by.

P.S. Excellent Phantom user pic!

I'm so with you on the chick flicks, Sherry. I have no shame in admitting that 'Miss Congeniality' is one of my all-time favourite films! I have so much love for Gracie Hart (especially pre-makeover, because that ketchup-spattered shirt, Jurassic Park-style walk, unkempt hair and resounding snort just make her all the more endearing). Michael Caine is hilarious: "I'm sorry, I was distracted by the half-masticated cow rolling around in your wide open trap." I don't understand all the hate for the sequel, either; I was high on all the unresolved sexual tension between Grace and Sam Fuller, and singing Tina Turner in yellow and pink Ostrich feathers was made of win. And when Sandra dressed up as Ida Flammenbaum, wheelchair-bound OAP... well, we were in hysterics.

Laura *is* hilarious in 'Pretty Woman' - and even better in 'Saving Grace' :D I couldn't believe it when I realised she played Kit, and now I get even more of a kick out of her performance. Julia Roberts just makes my heart melt every time - whether she's watching that old comedy skit and pissing herself laughing, singing 'Kiss' in the bath, awestruck by the opera, or flaunting her wares in front of those pretentious bitches. And, Oh God, "Ever After" - I love it when Drew negotiates with the bandits and tells them they have to let Prince Charming go free if she can carry him away herself... and then proceeds to do so! And I love Melanie Lynskey as the not-so-evil stepsister, too.

I'm also a huge fan of 'Coyote Ugly,' which I've watched about 12 times to date (and that *is* a guilty pleasure LOL). I really enjoyed 'PS. I Love You,' too. I've never seen 'Ladyhawke' - I'll have to check it out.

You read smutty fics? *is shocked and appalled* Well, I suppose it's better than writing them *clears throat and whistles innocently* I could never read/write porn without plot, either.

And Barbara Streisand is a legend: "It's a riiiiiight I defend, over and over again..." And I never fail to grin from ear to ear when listening to Neil Diamond, because I once won a tenner off my Mum, who was convinced he was actually singing about a 'Reverend In Blue Jeans' PMSL.

There's only one time I refuse to watch chick flicks and that's on Valentine's Day. *BIG GRIN* If I'm not dating anyone, why should I torture myself by watching another woman get the guy, you know what I mean? Why should I watch something like that and feel inferior or like a big fat loser, because I don't have some kind of romance in my own life? Instead, on that 'holiday,' I rebel by taking myself out to dinner (with something fantastic for dessert) and then watching the antithesis of chick flicks: action movies. X-Men, the Matrix (watching Trinity kick some ass is fairly therapeutic), Die Hard, Lethal Weapon (the first one), whatever is opposite of smooshy, lovey-dovey stuff. Heeheeee. Maybe that's silly of me, but I kind of enjoy it! It's become a bit of a tradition. Hell, even if I find a compatible guy someday, maybe he'll keep that tradition with me. Could be fun. ;)

I love that Michael Caine line you listed. He is so funny in that film. He has a terrific antagonistic relationship with Gracie. I can't say much about the sequel because I only saw it once, quite a while back, so I don't remember it well. Was there a pirate ship in it, at some point? *laughing* I don't recall enjoying it as much as the first film, but since you seem to like it a lot, maybe I should give it another shot. :)

I really should find some episodes of Saving Grace online and download them from the beginning, so I can see that show for myself! A-hunting I will go...

Laura as Kit in Pretty Woman: heeeeeee. Every time I think of her in that film, I picture her sitting on -- what was it? -- a sink (??), brushing her teeth, talking to Julia's character on the phone, and writing "Reg Bev Will" on the porcelain in lipstick, so she'd know where to meet her friend. It's all in the way she spoke it and wrote it. She's such a kick. And so agreed on all the moments you mention from that film. Good stuff, very entertaining.

Yay for Drew carrying Prince Charming away on her shoulder! I totally forgot about that! That was hilarious. And you're right about Melanie. I really like her character a lot. She's so sweet and funny. I'm glad they didn't make her a total bitch like the other sister.

I've never seen Coyote Ugly. What's it about? And which one is P.S. I Love You? Is that with ... *tries to remember* ... the actress from Boys Don't Cry? (Her name escapes me at the moment. Argh.)

Some people don't get Ladyhawke, and I will admit it's a strange mesh. But I find the concept really romantic, and I like Matthew Broderick, and there's some cool orchestral music in it, and ... *shrugs* I just like it. It's one I don't watch often, but every once in a blue moon I'll pull it out and rewatch it. It always makes me smile.

Splitting this into two posts, because -- as per usual -- I have gotten wordy. *shakes head* Sorry about that!

Annnnnd... part 2 of my reply. :)

You read smutty fics? *is shocked and appalled*

HAHAHAHHA

Well, I said occasionally. *GRIN*

Seriously, if it comes down to it, I'd rather read a story that has actual story to it, because sex scene "stories" get boring and pointless fairly quickly.

However, like I said in my post, there are those rare authors that can write a sex scene that actually has a point within the story, or that manages to reveal the character's inner thoughts and behaviors and traits even through the sex, which is a remarkable feat. Don't you think? Especially in comparison to all those fan fic writers who don't write sex well, you know what I mean? They just write it to write it, I suppose just to be titillating -- insert your Brennan and Booth reference about that word, as heard in the opening scene of Bones episode "Man with the Bone," LOL -- but without even taking the actual characters into consideration. That's just stupid to me. I may give it glance, to give the author a chance, but the moment I see that it's poorly written and out of character just to have a sex story, I don't bother to read it any further. Whether it's a general story or one rated NC-17, I demand quality writing, damn it! *GRIN*

Are you going to defriend me now that my guilty pleasure is out of the proverbial fan fic closet? It's shocking and horrifying, I know. ;)

Well, I suppose it's better than writing them *clears throat and whistles innocently*

*arches eyebrow* Oh? Do tell, my dear. *wink*

*laughs at the "Reverend in Blue Jeans" comment* That is classic. Heeeeeeeee. Awesome. And good on you for winning the bet. *still chuckling*

By the way, I once got to see Barbra in concert. Just a few years ago. A very last-minute, can't-believe-it-myself, is-this-really-happening sort of opportunity that I'll never forget. Quite the trip (literally and metaphorically speaking). She was more amazing that I can say. (Well, I could say, but it would require writing a post about it. It's the kind of thing that deserves that much reverence. You know me... I'm a talker. LOL.)

P.S. Most excellent Barbra lyric reference! *nods appreciatively*

I like your Valentine’s Day strategy! It must be hard to escape all the marketing in the States. It’s not quite as in-your-face over here (just like Halloween), but it’s still something that’s widely celebrated. Like you, I try not to mope about being single, though. Relationships are invariably more hassle than they’re worth, and epic love affairs seem to be the stuff of fiction. I think everyone dreams about meeting their soul mate, and I’m certainly no exception, but I’m one of those idealistic folks who isn’t prepared to settle for anything less and, if that means I die old and alone, then so be it. I’ve never been plagued by the feeling that I need someone else to complete me - or wasted more than a few months in relationships that were going nowhere, and I’m quite content to live vicariously through TV for now ;) From everything I’ve seen outside of that fairytale fantasy, love never lasts and usually disintegrates into resentment anyway. You only have to look at the divorce rate to know that people quickly tire of making sacrifices, changing to suit someone else’s needs, over-analysing everything they say and do etc, and I’ve had plenty of experience in terms of seeing people who don’t have anything left to say to one another anymore, or seem to have more contempt for each other than affection. So I don’t really feel like I’m missing out on much!

There was indeed a pirate ship in Miss Congeniality: Armed and Fabulous. It was one of those sinking showboats they have in Vegas. Don’t get me wrong, the sequel was by no means as entertaining as the original, but I still enjoyed it. I’m definitely in the minority there, though, given that it has a rating of 4.7 on IMDB.

The ‘Cinder-fuckin’-rella’ scene has got to me my favourite Laura moment in ‘Pretty Woman,’ shortly followed by her refusal to stick around because she hates saying goodbye.

‘Coyote Ugly’ is about a naive young woman who leaves her much-loved father behind to move to New York and follow her dream - to become a songwriter. Unfortunately, the only way she can get her material heard is to perform it herself at open mic nights, and she has a crippling case of stage fright. She’s strapped for cash, and eventually winds up shedding her nun-like image to become a “Coyote,” in a bar where most of the scantily-clad girls dance on the bartop for tips. Violet just pours drinks at first, but eventually winds up becoming quite the show-stopper and falling in love with one of the sweetest guys ever to have graced my screen – and she never gives up on her goal, either. It sounds like an anti-feminist nightmare, but the bar is run by a kick-ass broad who won’t let the patrons lay a finger on her staff, and all the Coyotes are strong, independent women – one of them winds up going to law school. It’s kind of part romance, part musical, part dance flick and Piper Perabo is just so damn adorable. And it’s not like I haven’t danced on a few tables in my lifetime LOL.

‘P.S. I Love You’ does indeed star Hilary Swank, one of my all-time favourite actresses. Her husband dies and leaves her a bunch of letters, each of which contain a task she has to complete in order to move on with her life after he’s gone – like going to a bar and singing karaoke, for example. Most of them force her to reminisce about their time together in some way, though. It’s such a moving portrayal of grief, but there are some really funny scenes, too. It’s of those wonderful films that can make you laugh and cry at the same time.

TBC...

I was only teasing you about the NC-17 fics – I read them, too. Not since I abandoned the ‘Bones’ fandom, mind you, but I sampled more than my fair share in the past. I mostly veer towards the ‘once you’ve read one smutty fic, you’ve read them all’ mentality but, fortunately, there are a few masterpieces that rise above the trough and actually have a context. Plausible characterisation is a must for me, too – and it’s got to mean something to the characters beyond a meaningless fuck. I can’t stand fics that are graphic / gratuitous purely for the sake of it… and I will admit to recoiling in horror at some of them. I like to think I’m a liberal, open-minded kind of girl (I was laughing uproariously at ‘Eurotrash’ at the tender age of 14) but, apparently, I’m pretty old-fashioned when it comes to sex, because I hadn’t even heard of some of the stuff that was being thrown around in the ‘Bones’ kink memes. I hate the phenomenon of rough/angry sex fics, too; for me, consensual sex should not involve throwing each other around or causing one another physical pain. I mean, it might be in keeping with certain characters, but I don’t think Brennan or Booth would be up for that, somehow.

And yes, I did write my first NC-17 fic for the ‘Bones’ fandom about a year and a half ago. What can I say, I like a challenge, and it was quite the experience given my limited knowledge of the male anatomy *cringes* It’s called ‘Searching For Salvation’ and I was pretty damn proud of it at the time, although I could definitely improve on it now and it still makes me blush a little when I re-read it. It has a plot (and a pretty harrowing one at that) and hopefully the characters are true to form. Here’s the link if you’re ever bored: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4573378/1/Searching_For_Salvation

The Barbara concert sounds amazing! And yep, as always, I’m with you on the wordy front LOL.
