If there's something out there that you need or want to see but it's not been created yet, if you have the ability, means and desire to create it yourself or with someone who can help you build it, go for it.

Tomorrow is Graduation Day.

Almost exactly 20 years to the day that I first graduated from college, I will be receiving a new degree.

Look! I even have a cap and gown and everything! (Still in its packaging. I better go iron that thing for tomorrow. LOL.)

If I may take a moment to toot my own horn, so to speak... I also got an "Outstanding Scholar Award" certificate from my school. Whoo! ;)

Seriously though, this has been a bit surreal. I wasn't even going to attend the ceremony because I technically graduated almost 6 months ago, when I completed my course load back in December. But my very dear, supportive sister talked me into it. She said, "It's closure! You have to go! And we'll come and cheer you on! Get excited!"

So here I am, on the eve before my graduation, feeling a little prouder than I thought I would be, a little more excited than I thought I would be, and grateful that she talked me into 'taking a moment' to acknowledge the conclusion of over 3 years of effort. To acknowledge this brief moment in time and savor the accomplishment.

Of course, I don't need to keep going to school in order to keep learning. I hope I'll always have an open mind to absorb as much knowledge as I can, and open eyes to notice everything around me that holds magic and mystery.

On to the next fork in the never-ending path ahead of me! Thank you for your company on this journey so far.

I feel drained today.

This morning I got up early to attend a job workshop at the local college. Cut to me in the classroom, getting all teary-eyed and then breaking down in front of the presenter after the class was over.

Yeah, that's not embarrassing whatsoever.

For the lovely [livejournal.com profile] jordle, who wanted a good Leo McGarry quote. (Per her own post here.)

There are so many terrific Leo quotes and this is definitely more than a quick quote, but I do enjoy this particular moment from episode 1x03. It's remarkable because the President (Bartlet) is getting a long-needed reprimand from his own Chief of Staff (Leo), and it's a testament to their rich friendship that he finally hears what Leo is trying to say. When you see the scene, as acted by the magnificent John Spencer and the marvelous Martin Sheen, you'll realize how truly unforgettable this exchange is.


From The West Wing, "A Proportional Response":


LEO: We are behaving the way a superpower ought to behave.

BARTLET: Well, our behavior has produced some pretty crappy results. In fact, I'm not a hundred percent sure it hasn't induced them.

LEO: What are you talking about?

BARTLET: I'm talking about two hundred and eight-six American Marines in Beirut, I'm talking about Somalia, I'm talking about Nairobi!

LEO: And you think ratcheting up the body count's gonna act as a deterrent?

BARTLET: You're damn right.

BARTLET: And this is good?

LEO: Of course it's not good, there is no good. It's what there is. It's how you behave if you're the most powerful nation in the world. It's proportional, it's reasonable, it's responsible, it's merciful. It's not nothing. Four high-rated military targets.

BARTLET: Which they'll rebuild again in six months.

LEO: (yelling) So we'll blow 'em up again in six months! We're getting really good at it. (pauses, quiet now) It's what our fathers taught us.

BARTLET: (ruefully, as he calms down) Why didn't you say so? (pauses) Oh man, Leo. When I think of all the work you put in to get me to run... when I think of all the work you did to get me elected... I could pummel your ass with a baseball bat.

(they both bust out laughing)

It's a gorgeous day here in Illinois. The sun is shining, the breeze is warm, and the falling leaves are vibrant and colorful.

As soon as I'm finished posting this, I'm going outside to savor a walk, but for now, I wanted to say that I have just returned from my polling location.

My vote has been posted. My voice has been heard!

Over the past months, my voice has been generally quiet, as I've become exceedingly weary of all the campaigning and the ever-present, often heated political discussions. I admit I'll be relieved when all the votes have been counted and this election process is complete.

Putting personal exhaustion aside for a moment, I cannot deny that today is a significant day. History will be made. We will either see the first African-American President, or the first female Vice-President, of the United States. That is so remarkable, I could cry.

Last election, filled with civic duty pride, I posted a humorous quote (to MySpace) from one of my favorite politically-themed television programs. Today I shall post a new quote, this one exemplifying why I think it's so important to vote. And why it's important to be informed and get involved.

As said by Leo McGarry (the beloved, magnificent actor John Spencer), during an episode entitled "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen, Part I," from The West Wing:

"Because I'm tired of it. Year after year after year after year, having to choose between the lesser of 'who cares'? Of trying to get myself excited about a candidate who can speak in complete sentences. Of setting the bar so low... I can hardly look at it. They say a good man can't get elected President. I don't believe that, do you?"

I want to believe that a good man or woman can get elected President. I want to believe that despite our political differences, we all want something positive to happen in this country, and for everyone, everywhere around the world. I want to believe that things can change for the better.

In order to make those changes, in order to demand what it is we want to see from our own government, we all must vote.

As I said in that first post over on MySpace, and I think it bears repeating, it's important! It's our right and our privilege. And you know what they say: Do it or don't do it, but if you don't do it, you don't get to bitch about the state of the country. You never know, your vote could have swung things in a whole other direction.

Go vote!
